Lesson Plans

Nature Journaling Unit Plan

Printing Guide

This unit was designed with field use in mind. Each lesson section is sized to print on a sheet of 11×17 paper, double sided (flip on the short edge), and folded into a reference card. The goal is to provide a handout written directly to the user, that easily fits on a clipboard, is sturdy in outdoor conditions, and captures the strategies, directions, and sample pages in a visually appealing at-hand reference for students.

It is also possible to print this guide on 8.5×11 in the same fashion for a smaller version that can tuck directly into their nature journal.

Additionally, a standard single 8.5×11 paged pdf of this guide is also available if you prefer to store individual sheets in a binder or duotang. This option is directly below each original downloadable file (see below).

Printed copies available for a donation of $20, inquire at info@oneschoolonefarm.com

Curriculum Connections and Resources

Native Prairie, Biodiversity & Restoration

  • Students will learn about active and passive restoration.
  • Students will understand the concept of native prairie and the importance of preserving it.
  • Students will learn about biodiversity, keystone species, and habitat fragmentation.
  • Students will explore the economic, aesthetic, and educational benefits of active restoration.
  • Students will learn about native prairie seeds including how to plant and care for them.

The Great Plains Unit Plan

  • Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of prairie ecosystems, specifically focusing on Saskatchewan’s native grasslands.
  • Students will explore the historical impact of human activities on native prairies, recognizing the consequences of rapid development on the ecosystem.
  • Students will recognize and appreciate the concept of self-healing systems within prairies,
understanding the importance of natural regeneration for sustaining these ecosystems.
  • Students will understand the unique adaptations of native prairie grasses, including water
conservation strategies, nocturnal growth patterns, and underground resilience during adverse conditions.

Plant Research and Ecological Design Unit

Mapping out a planting design is a fun way to connect math, science, and art, while maintaining a connection with the land partner site through the winter months.

Soil Health Lab

Students will investigate soil health by analyzing soil samples, identifying key indicators of soil quality, and drawing conclusions about the impact of different factors on soil health.

Backpacking for Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in a particular habitat or ecosystem. It includes all the different species of plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms, as well as the genetic differences within these species and the ecosystems they form.

The “Backpacking for Biodiversity” initiative is part of the One School One Farm project, which aims to connect students with local farms and natural areas to promote environmental stewardship. By participating in this hike, we are raising awareness and funds to support biodiversity conservation efforts in our community.
